Greetings!
Today we have the Corn Moon/Sturgeon Moon/Red Moon, as they are known in native traditions, and of course all of these are alternative names for this Full Moon with the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Aquarius in the tropical zodiac. Let’s look at these for insight into the natural world around us to get a better understanding of how these names came to be. The title of the corn moon makes sense, as this is the time when the corn is coming to it’s full grown height, and is about to be harvested. There’s an old country saying about corn that I remember from my youth: “Knee high by the 4th of July.” In short, this simply means that it’s a good sign if the corn crop was that height by July 4th. I remember years where it was, and I remember years where it wasn’t, and the according harvest reflected that. Symbolically, corn represents wealth and abundance, and hence this is a prime time to take stock in what we have, and where we’ll go from here regarding these two topics. A point that I like to make with people is that wealth and abundance aren’t the same thing, and one can be abundant yet not wealthy, and vice versa. Too many times people lump these two together, and understandably so, but really they are two very different ideas, much like emotions and feelings. At this time it is wise to check our inner storehouses to see where we stand with such things.
A sturgeon is a type of bottom feeding fish that travels upstream to spawn in the spring, and the fact that this moon is alternatively called the sturgeon moon tells us that this is the time of the year when they would most commonly be found in their natural habitats. There is a lot of rich symbolism that goes with the sturgeon, so let’s take a closer look to tap into this symbolism at this time. The fact that sturgeons are bottom feeders, like catfish, tell us that they live off of what’s on the bottom of the river or lake. If you consider water corresponding to emotions, then these would be the fish that can live off of whatever is at the bottom. I won’t get too in-depth with this, but suffice to say that there are emotions that are bottom emotions, and these include such emotions as anger, hate, jealousy, and rage. Sturgeons symbolically correspond to strength and longevity, and the ability to endure going against the grain, so to speak, but their weakness can be found in the sometimes challenging inability to change, as they may be too fixed in their ways.
This being the Red Moon is very interesting due to the fact that often times this is the time of the year that a red moon can be seen. Of course this doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, it’s a spectacular sight. There have been many times that I’ve seen a Red Moon, and it has struck a cord with me about it’s majesty and mysterious allure.
From an astrological perspective, this is the time to harmonize the other with the self, and to reflect on how to focus on one without sacrificing the other. It’s never wise to focus on one but not the other, no matter which way you prefer. I encourage you to meditate on this during this Full Moon, and see what insights come regarding the harmonizing of these two concepts. By finding the middle ground, each of us can make a difference in our lives and the lives of those we come into contact with, and as we do, energetic waves ripple out into the consensual paradigm that we all share, raising the vibration of all.
